Wild Rose Farm
Growing quinoa and vegetables at Wild Rose Farm is a multi-generation family affair. One of only two domestic quinoa growers, Blake Richard, his 21 year old son and his 75 year old dad work together to farm 200 acres of certified organic rainbow quinoa. The farm, named after the family cat and the wild roses growing on the property, is on the Mad River 16 miles northeast of Eureka, California. Mild coastal weather is key to their growing success.
Wild Rose quinoa is completely dry farmed, meaning no irrigation is ever used (great news considering California’s current drought). According to Blake, “We are tillage minimalists, i.e. we strive to minimize organic matter degradation and petroleum use, knowing full well that we could do better, as could all farming including organic; but we are trying. We cultivate for weed control and to conserve soil moisture.”
After growing quinoa experimentally for nine years, Blake began selling it commercially. 2015 marks the sixth year of marketing Wild Rose quinoa; the timing coincides with increased demand as consumers began to adopt quinoa, along with other ancient grains, as a satisfying alternative to starchier pasta and rice.
