Johansen Ranch

Orland, California

Johansen Ranch is a multi-generational family farm in Orland, in Northern California. The farm dates back to 1910 and Rich Johansen currently runs the 80-acre farm in Orland, California with his wife, Mila, and daughter, Olivia.

Rich’s mother was allergic to pesticides, so the family had to use alternative methods to address fertilization and pest control. They took this a step further in the late 1970’s, when the farm became organic, and became certification pioneers. That is when Veritable Vegetable started selling their citrus. Much of their transition to organic was done under the guidance of the ranch manager, Ned Wilson, who was Cherokee, and had experience farming in ways that were friendly to the land.

Today, Johansen Ranch remains organic, and grows a wide range of citrus fruits, as well as grapes, winter squash, and over a dozen varieties of olives. One of the most popular items they grow is the sweet and juicy Satsuma Mandarin.

The preservation of the land has always been paramount to the Johansen family, and as they continue to expand their citrus varieties, they always look for ways to care for the soil while growing high quality fruit.
