Straus is a family-owned and operated business located in Marshall, California. They were the first certified organic dairy west of the Mississippi River and the first 100% certified organic creamery in the United States. Going organic allowed them to continue and expand practices reflecting the best form of stewardship in terms of environmental care, care for animals and quality of life for communities and family farms.

They like to act on their beliefs and values and they have done so since the very beginning. Over the years, this has translated into a wide range of sustainable practices at Straus Family Creamery that aim to preserve organic integrity, reduce their carbon footprint, support family farms and take responsibility for what is happening in their local communities and the food system at large. In 2019, Straus offices and warehouse received TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) zero-waste certification at the Gold level from Green Business Certification Inc. for a focus on sustainability across the business.

Marshall is located in West Marin County on the Northern California Coast, known for its mild, coastal climate, pristine coastal grassland and fresh marine air. Their 275 dairy cows (Holstein and Jersey-Holstein cross breeds), 35 dry cows, 170 heifers, 82 calves and 3 bulls have 500 acres of pasture on which they roam during the day; and at night they sleep on cow mats with natural bedding in an open barn. During summer, the air is cooled by fog and the grass is dried up. Winters are cool, lush green, foggy and wet. Cows love the climate in Marshall.
