Terra Firma Farm is a 200-acre CCOF-certified organic farm in Winters, California — one of Northern California’s oldest fruit and vegetable-growing regions, about 70 miles from San Francisco. The farm has been growing vegetables and fruit year-round for over 30 years.

The farm took root in the late 1980s, when founder Paul Holmes started farming a few acres west of Winters as Sky High Farm, developing a following for his garlic, tomatoes, and other vegetables as a founding member of both the Davis and Berkeley Farmers Markets. The CSA launched in 1994, and as membership grew, the farm did as well. Today it is run by Paul Underhill and Hector Melendez — and cultivates roughly 150 acres of vegetables and 50 acres of fruit and nut orchards.

Spread across a number of sites along the north and south banks of Putah Creek, microclimates and varied soil types allow the farm to produce almost 100 different crops each year. A reliable, clean, and sustainable water supply comes from nearby Lake Berryessa, the source of Putah Creek, which irrigates the fields along its banks and recharges the farm’s groundwater wells. In that spirit, the farm continually strives to practice ecologically sustainable agriculture that protects and builds the soil, provides habitat for wildlife, conserves energy and water, and produces healthier, more nutritious fruits and vegetables.

The farm is equally committed to its people, providing full-time, year-round employment and employing roughly ten times as many workers per acre as most regional farms. By packing, selling, and delivering its own products, it offers jobs with room for vertical career growth.
