Our Main Squeeze: Cara Cara Orange

Cara Cara Orange

‘Tis the season for citrus! Among the sea of oranges, tangerines and grapefruit, one  variety shines very bright among your vast choices. The Cara Cara Navel orange, a cross between the Washington Navel and the Brazilian Bahia Navel is an attractive, popular and delicious variety we can’t get enough of. Cara Caras are very new to the classic citrus scene and were first discovered in 1976 at the Hacienda La Cara Cara in Valencia, Venezuela on a Washington Navel tree. From Venezuela, this unusual variety was introduced to Florida and then California, where it has adapted very well.

Though similar in appearance to Navel oranges on the outside, Cara Caras are uniquely different with jewel-toned pink-red colored flesh (similar to pink grapefruit coloring). Cara Caras are seedless, have little to no pith and separate easily from the rind. Their aromatic flavor is low in acid and richly sweet with notes of berries. Enjoy as a fresh snack or add to your yogurt or atop a salad! The juice is wonderful in a citrus vinaigrette or a sweet marinade for fish or poultry.

Not only are Cara Caras delicious, they have plenty of immunity boosters to fight off winter colds. They are an excellent source of vitamins A and C, fiber, potassium, and folate. The heart-healthy antioxidant lycopene gives the flesh its distinct pink-red color. Try adding signage to your displays to direct customers looking for nutrient-rich foods!

Cara Caras bring a much-appreciated pop of color to the cold winter, nor can their flavor be beat; they are truly a staff favorite at VV.
