Founded in 1976 by Kathleen Barsotti and Martin Barnes, Capay Organic is a second-generation family farm now run by their sons — Noah, Thaddeus and Freeman. Located in Yolo County, near Sacramento, California they offer a year-round selection of specialty organic produce. Their farm started as a means of supplying the pioneering Davis Farmers Market, which they co-founded with two other farm families. The original home farm in Northern California is now 500-acres; they also farm 200-acres in Imperial County in Southern California and 165 in Bakersfield and Salinas to provide year-round supply.

Capay’s farming practices are firmly rooted in organic standards, incorporating environmentally sustainable procedures such as crop rotation, beneficial insect habitat (hedgerows) development and maintenance, local fertilizer selections, efficient drip irrigation systems coupled with irrigation scheduling driven by plant needs, sediment trap installations and maintenance and dedicated wild areas populated with California native plants. The farm’s planting schedule is built around creating year-round work for their family of employees. Additionally, they believe in fostering a culture of engagement and respect that creates a healthy work environment as well as providing opportunities for upward mobility within the organization.
