Capay Organic
Sacramento Valley, California http://www.capayorganic.com/Founded in 1976 by Kathleen Barsotti and Martin Barnes, Capay Organic is a second-generation family farm now run by their sons – Noah, Thaddeus and Freeman. Located in Yolo County, California they offer a year-round selection of specialty organic produce. Their farm started as a means of supplying the pioneering Davis Farmers Market, which they co-founded with two other farm families. The original home farm in Northern California is now 500-acres; they also farm 200-acres in Imperial County in Southern California and 165 in Bakersfield and Salinas to provide year-round supply.
Carrying on the family entrepreneurial spirit, the Barsotti brothers built their local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program into one of the most successful ‘home delivery produce box’ services in the country, Farm Fresh to You. Check it out here.
Capay’s farming practices are firmly rooted in organic standards, incorporating environmentally sustainable procedures such as crop rotation, beneficial insect habitat (hedgerows), efficient drip irrigation systems and irrigation driven by plant needs, sediment trap installations, and dedicated wild areas populated with California native plants. The farm’s planting schedule is built around creating year-round work for their family of employees. Additionally, they believe in fostering a culture of engagement and respect, creating a healthy work environment and providing opportunities for upward mobility within the organization.
130+ Varieties of Fruits and Vegetables (too many to mention), although Capay Organics is renowned for their cherished Blenheim Apricot and early Satsuma Tangerine.
