In 1981, Bob Steinacher bought the 265-acres of land for Maywood Farms in Corning, California. In 1986, he had his first harvest where he hand-picked, packed, then drove the figs to the San Francisco terminal market. The response from the buyers was so good that he decided to focus on the fresh fig market. Also in 1986, Bob met and married Karen. Together, the farm has become a successful operation where Bob handles shipping and sales while Karen runs the crews and oversees production.

Maywood Farms has been CCOF certified organic since 1990. Today, Maywood Farms is home to five exceptional varieties of figs – Mission, Adriatic, Kadota, Excel, and Brown Turkey. Maywood Farms’ entire operation is located in one site. This includes the orchard, packing shed, cooler, and Bob and Karen’s home. This set up allows them to start cooling the figs within 20 minutes of picking, to carefully monitor production, and to adjust their volume according to sales. As a result, the figs are shipped immediately after being fully cooled.
