SBimal (pronounced Es-Beh-Mall) is a family-owned producer and exporter of organic yellow turmeric from the island of Fiji, in the South Pacific. The company is owned and operated by Saurabh Patel and Bimal Patel; ‘SBimal’ is a combination of their two first names.

The turmeric that SBimal exports grows vigorously in the tropical countryside, and local farmers operate across 600 acres of mountainous terrain, enriched by volcanic soil. This turmeric grows year-round, giving it an advantage over many other growing regions. Plants take about ten months to produce mature rhizomes (underground stem of the plant).

Saurabh works with the local farmers who harvest the turmeric, while Bimal oversees the exporting and marketing operations, ensuring that every shipment arrives in excellent condition. They have two warehouses for grading and packing, and each facility employees about 20 people. SBimal sells only to wholesalers in the USA; there are no web sales or direct to retail.

Saurabh spent his childhood learning about farming from his father. During a visit to Fiji in his 20’s, Saurabh saw an opportunity to work with the land there. He began farming his own turmeric in Fiji in 2012, exporting small quantities to the USA. However, by 2016, his turmeric was too popular to meet demand, and he and Bimal established SBimal to increase production. Today, Saurabh works with 437 local family farms from multiple villages, and exports about 145 tons to the USA each month.

Bimal recognized the opportunity in the expanding turmeric market, and she built the business up to what it is today. Additionally, most of the farms are managed by the women in each family, and thus SBimal is truly a women-owned and operated business.

SBimal was certified organic in 2021.
