Spring is in full swing and so are snap peas! California-grown sugar snap peas are starting to roll in with strong volume and beautiful quality. These vibrant green pods are crisp, juicy, and bursting with sweet fresh flavor.
Beloved for their tender edible pods and sweetness, snap peas are a hybrid of snow peas and English peas. They were developed in the 1970s by plant breeders to combine the best of both pea varieties: sweetness and crunch, fully developed peas, but with no shelling required. With all the same bright color and sweet pea flavor, these babies are ready to go and are a huge time saver!
Peas have long been celebrated in many cultures around the world. In Chinese cuisine, snap peas are often stir-fried with garlic or ginger and side-by-side with more traditionally used flat snow peas for a savory side dish. In French kitchens, snap peas have been quickly adopted as a fresh staple of springtime sautés and elegant salads. In Mediterranean regions, peas are often included in stews and soups. Whether tossed in a salad, sautéed, or simply snacked on raw, they’re the ultimate springtime treat. It’s a great time to promote this seasonal favorite!
New & Exciting!
Apricot: Coming soon! Cooler temps have delayed harvest a little bit, but fresh apricots are expected to arrive any minute now.
Bosc Pear: Another Argentinian pear joins the spring lineup! Bosc have a distinct appearance—warm cinnamon brown with russeting all over. The flavor is crisp and woodsy with a honey sweetness.
Fun Fact: Many artists feature russeted Bosc pear in their paintings, drawings, and photography because of their remarkable color, pleasing shape and natural beauty.
Cherry: Arvin Glenn cherries from Murray Family Farms have arrived! Murray Family Farms is located in Bakersfield, California and has a cult following among locals at Southern California farmers markets. Tioga and Hazel varieties from Sweet Adeline and Fruit World labels have also been picked and more are on their way. Everyone is expecting pricing to be high to start but will slide down in the next week or two. Growers are predicting a smaller crop than years past. Inconsistent warm weather and fog this winter combined with confused bee pollinators have caused uneven yields throughout California.
Corn: Early season California-grown corn is expected to come on the first week of May.
Fava Bean: AKA Broad Beans. The flavor is delicate, buttery and nutty. Some fans describe the sweet vegetal taste as “tasting like spring!” A chef’s favorite, we recommend them in soups or salads!
Garlic: After a short gap, garlic is coming back mid-May!
Green Bean: The first harvest of California-grown green beans has arrived!
New Crop Red Potato: California-grown and freshly harvested Red A’s and C’s are in! Dug before full maturity, these new crop potatoes are delicate, thin-skinned, and boast moist, creamy flesh with a naturally sweet, earthy flavor. Lightly cured but never stored, they’re best enjoyed simply — think steamed or roasted — to let their freshness shine!
New Crop “Short-Day” Onions: With Spring comes the arrival of new crop or “short-day” onions. Spring/summer onion varieties are called “short-day” because they are planted in the fall and their growing patterns are matched to days with shorter periods of sunlight. Short-day onions are sweeter than storage onions and have thinner lighter-colored skins. Be gentle, as they bruise more easily. These are best used fresh and not over-cooked. All of our onion growers are transitioning to short-day varieties.
Peach & Nectarine: Coming soon! The first variety of Krista yellow peaches is tentatively expected to come on May 10th. Zee Fire yellow nectarine, white peach and Polar Light white nectarine are a few days behind—arriving mid-May. Get excited!
Young Thai Coconut: Expected back May 6th!
