There’s no better time to spotlight tomatoes. Right now, we’re seeing an incredible mix of varieties—from sweet cherry tomatoes and colorful heirlooms to sought-after dry-farmed Early Girls—all coming in strong from California growers.
Cherry tomatoes are bringing plenty of color and variety to the category, with everything from classic reds to unique specialty varieties like Chocolate Stripe and Yellow Nova. Their sweet flavor, snackable size, and versatility make them an easy addition to displays and a customer favorite all summer long.
Heirloom tomatoes are where the season really shines. With unique shapes, colors, and flavors, varieties like Cherokee, Pineapple, Solar Flare, and Amana create eye-catching displays and give shoppers something special to seek out. Each variety has its own personality, from rich and smoky to sweet and fruity.
- Amana: Large, bright orange tomatoes with a meaty texture and mild, sweet flavor. A great food service variety for slicing, sandwiches, and salads.
- Berkeley Tie Dye: Vibrant green, red, and gold marbling and rich, balanced flavor.
- Black Pineapple: Ripens green with pink to red blushing throughout. Offers a rich, sweet flavor and unique appearance.
- Cherokee: Dusky purple, pink, and red tones. Known for its rich, complex flavor and juicy texture.
- Costoluto Genovese: An Italian heirloom with deep red color, pronounced ribbing, and a full-bodied tomato flavor. Excellent for slicing, sauces, and cooking.
- Lemon Boy: Bright yellow tomatoes with a smooth texture, mild acidity, and balanced sweet flavor. Another great variety for food service due to its pop in color!
- Pineapple: Yellow-orange flesh and red/green blush. Sweet, fruity, and low in acidity with a beautiful appearance.
- Solar Flare: A vibrant red tomato with orange striping. Sweet, juicy, and eye-catching for premium displays.
Dry-farmed Early Girl tomatoes are another summer standout. Grown with minimal water after the plants are established, these tomatoes develop deeper roots that concentrate their flavor, creating a smaller fruit with exceptional sweetness, acidity, and texture. They have earned a loyal following among tomato lovers for good reason.
With so many varieties available, now is the perfect time to build a tomato display that invites customers to explore. Mix colors, highlight specialty varieties, and let the season’s best tomatoes speak for themselves.
